The starter motor is an electric motor that is responsible for transforming the electrical energy in a crankshaft rotation so that the engine can start up.

The movement transmitted to the crankshaft is carried out by the pinion assembly located on the axis of rotation of the electric motor together with the ring gear located on the outside of the flywheel.

Finally, you will need an element that connects the pinion with the crown to rotate the crankshaft and uncouple it when the engine has been put into operation. This element is the contactor or solenoid.

The parts that make up the starter are the following:

Electric motor: that transforms the electrical energy of the battery in a turn.
Pinion assembly: transmits the rotation from the electric motor to the crankshaft.
Contactor: which connects and disconnects the pinion with the flywheel.

When the driver operates the key or ignition button the contactor or relay closes the circuit between the battery and the electric motor.
While moving the fork or lever that is pushing the pinion to make it mesh with the flywheel.
Finally, when the driver releases the ignition key the contactor returns to its resting position and with it the fork and once again the circuit is open again.

Types of starters

The most used are:
The contactor and fork starter motor.
The starting motor by contactor, fork and reducer.
The motor of boot by inertia or Bendix.
